Doctors and patients connect.

Hi Jay,
Why do you feel a need to be so confrontational?
i’m aware you’re a little inexperienced as a Doctor but i think you definitely shouldn’t try and teach marketing before you have the first idea about the subject.
Not only are you completely wrong when you “notice there isn’t a single healthcare brand in the Top 100 brands” because HP, Cisco, Intel and Siemens are all most definitely included and there are also brands belonging to major healthcare companies such as P&G and Colgate-Palmolive.
What tests my patience even more is that you somehow think a healthcare brand should want to compete considering the criteria/values measured to produce this “Top 100 Brand” list. Just look at the top ten and you’ve got a brand belonging to one of the worlds largest tobacco corporations (Malboro) and another (McDonalds) that has led and contributed towards the enormous growth of the fast food market - and the related childhood obesity epidemic that has led to us treating the first generation in which parents may outlive their children.
I can only assume you have little idea of the complexity or sensitivities of healthcare marketing – it’s not as easy or inexpensive as it is with comfort foods, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, sex, etc. I would have thought you of all people would have had this lesson already particularly when i saw the roasting your little local Dr IM based service got over on Gawker (http://gawker.com/news/no-scrubs/williamsburgs-hipster-doctor-will-diagnose-you-via-im-302311.php)
Criticising the CEO of RelayHealth isn’t going to help your argument either. As pioneers in online healthcare communications I am 100% sure he has more idea of what real patients want than you seem to.
Matthew
There is no reason technology cannot make it easy for patients to communicate with their own doctors on line, assuming that its sufficiently flexible to accomodate both patients’ and doctors’ needs. One such site is www.housedoc.us, that is easy to use, HIPAA compliant, free, and open to everyone.
