The problem with the Tufts program is that lifestyle modifications have not shown to be effective long-term. So, by requiring this hoop to jump through, are they just allowing their morbidly obese patients to become more ill, thus increasing their surgical risk? B.A. Mrad et al. found in the 2008 American Journal of Surgery article that preoperative weight loss was not indicative of post-op success in women. Perhaps having patients enroll in a post-op behavioral modification and exercise program might make sense as then they could deal with food issues and such as they come up, rather than hypothetically pre-op.
