George Shultz: Don’t Look Down on the American Consumer
by Fred Fortin
At the press briefing held by Former Secretary of State George P. Shultz and his co-author John Shoven on their new book, ‘Putting Our House in Order ‘ (which I outlined in a previous post), he was pressed by a physician at the table who spoke of the ignorance of patients about medical issues. Shultz interrupted the questioner immediately and exclaimed “You are wrong! Don’t look down on the American consumer.” He continued that when consumers are educated and given the right choices they make pretty darn good decisions. He cited as examples the reduction of smoking and the success of the Medicare Part D (drug) program.
