Microsoft’s HealthVault is open for business

by Tony Chen

Just a few hours ago, Microsoft announced its much-anticipated entry into healthcare with Health Vault. Described as a “personal health center,” consumers will be eventually be able to store their medical record on a private, secure website and have capabilities to do more refined health-related websearches. From Microsoft’s corporate healthcare lead,

“People are concerned to find themselves at the center of the healthcare ecosystem today because they must navigate a complex web of disconnected interactions between providers, hospitals, insurance companies and even government agencies…Our focus is simple: to empower people to lead healthy lives. The launch of HealthVault makes it possible for people to collect their private health information on their terms and for companies across the health industry to deliver compatible tools and services built on the HealthVault platform.”

The list of supporting organizations at today’s announcement was impressive - everyone from NY Pres Hospital to J&J to the American Heart Association to AllScripts. Regardless of the result, it’s an impressive, diverse list of supporters and collaborators who realize that betting on Microsoft is a smart investment.

Check out HealthVault and what the consumerism blog says. The biggest question we have to ask ourselves - are we comfortable with Microsoft owning our medical record?

Maybe Microsoft learned something watching Facebook open up their development approach. Looks like Microsoft’s approach will be an “open” one in which numerous other companies will be able to create tools and snap into their core system to deliver additional features/tools/functionality. They realize they want to be the platform, while the bells & whistles are better delivered by others.
