Interview/Podcast with Dr. Julie Gerberding, Director CDC

by Matthew Holt

Dr. Julie Gerberding is the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and could be called the top public health official in the nation. She’ll be presenting at the World Health Care Congress this coming week. In this interview she discusses the priorities for the CDC, how it’s working with industry and other government agencies in ways you might not expect, and what the major problem in health care is (One word–see if you can guess). We also talked, inevitably, about CDC’s work and role in assessing and preventing gun violence, following the tragedy at Virginia Tech earlier this week.

Just found this site. Thank you for the interview. Dr. Gerberding’s comment about the lack of Metaleadership in health care was spot on. Although I do not think the business sector is as far ahaed as she thinks. The other thought provoking comment was on the issue of complacency. It is a systemic problem that is true for many “content” issues such as obesity, a pandemic, hospital acquired infections, etc.. I would enjoy more dialogue on how to adress the complacency issue.
