Greetings everyone, it’s Tony from Hospital Impact - looking forward to the lively debate. I hope to represent the hospital voice here as well as explore some creative ideas for innovation.

Seems like everyday we hear about unlikely and innovative partnerships between providers and payers, between employers and unions, between employers and providers, between arch-rival companies - all in the name of healthcare. Seems like everyday that we hear about hospitals learning and implementing lessons from Toyota, IDEO, Nike, and Disney.

I find it very intriguing that Advisory Board and Sg2 are putting such an emphasis on international healthcare. I heard Michael Sachs just spent a whole month in India. Sure, there’s money to be made, but there are also so many lessons that we can learn from overseas. Just last week, my friend told me about a bamboo-based paint that many Japanese hospitals use that take away that “hospital smell.”

We in hospitals are learning (albeit VERY slowly).

Welcome Tony. Since you’ve joined in after my initial list of questions, here’s one for you:

What is/will be the impact of pay for performance programs on innovation in hospital operations? How does this differ between community hospitals and AMCs?

David - very interesting question - looks like the other folks have started to get at that exact question. I’ll answer in a separate post.
